A buck scoring more than 150 inches would be a prize for even an experienced hunter, and for 7-year-old Bailey Springmeyer, it will be a memory to last a lifetime.
Although her father, Chris Springmeyer, had to work at the Greensburg Fire Department on Dec. 6, Bailey and her mother, Denise Springmeyer, headed out with intentions of bringing home a deer. Working together, the mother-daughter duo met success.
The Springmeyer family loves the outdoors, Chris Springmeyer explained. In the summer, they spend time fishing and hiking, and when the season comes, they also hunt together. Each of their two children began bundling up for deer season at the age of 6, he explained. Last year, each one filled their tags by taking three deer. This year, each one got a buck, he said.
Although the children are young, they have been raised around guns and taught how to use them safely when supervised, he explained. Chris and Denise Springmeyer manage the deer herd on the land they own, and the children have the opportunity to be involved in the process. They have also been learning about giving to their community through their love of the outdoors.
As a family of avid outdoorspeople, the family takes deer each year. Some is used for the family, but much is given away. Meat has also been given to Harvest for the Hungry as well as the local soup kitchen, he explained.
