South Students Learn Leadership At Conference

GREENSBURG — GREENSBURG - Fifteen South Decatur FCCLA Members recently traveled to Conseco Fieldhouse for the 2009 Career Technical Student Organizations Fall Leadership Conference with the Indiana Pacers.

The morning was filled with FCCLA information about new projects and valuable tips for completing the National Programs. Workshops were conducted by the FCCLA State Officers to encourage members to make a difference in their local communities and to tell others about their efforts. The officers used games, activities, prizes and skits to illustrate many of the new projects. Therefore, members were entertained while learning helpful tips and possibilities for upcoming events.

In the afternoon, the five Career and Technical Student Organizations in attendance - BPA, DECA, HOSA, Skills USA and FCCLA – came together to experience Pacers Career Workshops presented by the Staff at Conseco. Sessions on Athletic Training, Public Relations, Broadcasting, Culinary and Game Entertainment and Promotions were among the most popular careers offered. The Pacers’ Head Athletic Trainer was on hand to discuss interesting details about his job and to answer many questions. The Director of Promotions and Fan Entertainment and the Dance Team Coordinator discussed the many entertaining “side shows” that are all a part of game-time: Pace-Mates, mascots, jugglers, clowns, bands and face painters.

Indiana colleges and universities also had representatives on hand to distribute literature and discuss options and offerings of higher education after high school.

Next, members were given time to shoot free throws on the Pacer basketball court. After a brief break for dinner, Third Eye Blind was in Concert on Pennsylvania Street in front of Conseco Fieldhouse. Finally the Pacer Tip-off time arrived and everyone enjoyed one of the first Pacer games of the season.

Members of the South Decatur FCCLA who attended the Leadership Conference were: Brooke Fear, Krystal Simpson, Steven Bennett, Kaleb Skaggs, Sherida Hughs, Krista Combs, Kayleigh Marshall, Rachel Campbell, Chelsi Gilbert, Lynn Coombs, Calyssa Harris, Elizabeth Ralston, Cassie Herbert, Paige Owens and Kylie Cornett. Mrs. Joyce Crane, teacher and FCCLA Adviser, accompanied the group.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is The Ultimate Leadership Experience. It is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
