Video made the high school star
Big things are happening for students involved with the television station at Greensburg Community High School.
Starting tonight, at 7 p.m., the student station will begin broadcasting on Enhanced Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) channels 9 and 609. Initially, the cable TV programming will be on a continuous loop including; a Greensburg varsity football game against Shelbyville, the 2007 graduation ceremony, a speech by Holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor, a junior high theater production and children's stories read by 2007 seniors.
"The faculty and staff have been extremely supportive," says Jesse Wallace, GCHS television station director.
Wallace also credits the station's progress to the school board and the support the members have shown.
In the coming semester, those involves with the station plan to have a system to control the programming. This enhancement will allow them to include more of the student’s original work. The class will be working on individual and group projects as well as filming public service announcements for broadcast. Every football game will be shot as will baseball and basketball games.
"The students are engaged, intelligent, and hardworking," said Wallace.
These high schoolers are getting the opportunity to learn by doing. As a teacher, Wallace is trying to ensure his students are well trained for the digital age of television and film. They work with digital video cameras and computer editing software. This does not mean that they have completely abandoned the older techniques. Wallace wants to send well-rounded and experienced graduates into their educational and occupational futures.
"People don't realize that 30 minutes of television requires 10 hours of filming and countless hours of editing," he says.
These teens are learning the whole process. The 20-person student staff works as a team to produce their work. Together, they will be participating in the production of a documentary about Honda's arrival and development in Greensburg as well as a week of environmental programming relating to Earth Day in April of 2008.
"We're going to see a lot of good things," says Wallace.
