Man charged with attempted child molestation

Greensburg — A local man faces dual felony charges after allegedly attempting to have sex with a four-year-old over the weekend.

According to Charging Information filed in the Decatur Circuit Court Monday, Joseph G. Yantiss, 25, has been charged with attempted child molesting, a class “A” felony, and child solicitation, a class “D” felony.

Yantiss was arrested Sunday following allegations he sent text messages to a woman stating he wished to have sexual intercourse with her four-year-old daughter. Yantiss then went to the woman’s home Saturday and began actively looking for the girl, going so far as opening bedroom doors in his search. Charging Information describes this act as “a substantial step toward commission of the crime.”

Due to the sensitive nature of the case, the names of the alleged victims as well as the address at which the events are stated to have occurred were not disclosed in court documents.

Yantiss appeared in court Monday in front of Judge Tim Day and a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. A cash bond in the amount of $100,000 was subsequently set for the defendant, meaning Yantiss would have to post $10,000 in order to be released from the Decatur County Jail. H. Curtis Johnson, a public defender, was appointed as counsel for Yantiss. Deputy Prosecutor Doug Brown will represent the state in the case.

The suspect’s trial was set for 9 a.m. June 3 at the Initial Hearing Monday, and an Omnibus Date was scheduled for April 3.
