BCSC’s C4 School holding Open House

Greensburg — The Columbus Area Career Connection (C4) will host its third annual open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Jan. 23, at the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) Administration Building, located at 1200 Central Avenue, Columbus.

The C4 program, which helps prepare students in Decatur and three other Central Indiana Counties for specialized careers after high school, is run by the BCSC.

Following 2012’s Open House, C4 Marketing Specialist Pru Cooley characterized the event as crucial in dispelling the myth that C4 is only for students not attending college. "Nothing could be further from the truth," Cooley said at the time. "In fact, C4 students can earn college credits."

C4, Cooley explained, has a wide range of opportunities beyond “automotive and welding.”

She clarified, however, that, for the right students, automotive and welding might represent great career choices, even allowing for hands-on, real-world income while earning certifications or degrees.

Cooley listed a diverse range of fields in which C4 students can earn college credit hours: Engineering, nursing, architecture, cosmetology, law enforcement, automotive, computers, culinary arts, early childhood, sports nutrition, interior and fashion design, and many others.

One of C4’s biggest benefits, she added, is that the program allows students to sample certain career fields without committing to them and paying college credit hours for them. Considering the large percentage of students uncertain of their career paths going into college, such an opportunity may allow for huge savings in time and money.

Moreover, Cooley estimated, C4 students saved more than $1 million in college tuition fees during the 2011-2012 school year.

With a little encouragement from her teacher and from Triple R Owner Debbie Richards, GJHS Eighth Grader Jewel Clarke overcame her fear and saddled up, taking her first horseback ride Wednesday afternoon. Twenty-three-year-old rescued horse Willie is an old hand with kids by now and made a perfect partner for Clarke’s first go in the stirrups.
