National Spay and Neuter Month upcoming

Greensburg — A glance at the Humane Society’s website, and perhaps a memorable quote from former “Price is Right” host Bob Barker, will remind pet enthusiasts to spay and neuter their fuzzy friends.

February will bring about World Spay Day and Spay Day USA through the Humane Society.

Spaying and neutering pets helps lower the amount of animals capable of reproducing on the streets and outside of animal shelters where they will likely be euthanized due to a of lack of those willing or able to adopt.

The Greensburg/Decatur County Animal Shelter does not have the luxury (funds or room) of being a “no-kill” shelter.

The good news, according to shelter manager Laura Johnston, is that the shelter has seen a 10 percent drop in animals taken into the facility since 2009.

“This means people are beginning to spay and neuter,” Johnston said.

All animals in the shelter are spayed and neutered. The animals also receive full vaccinations, are checked for parasites and heartworms. Dogs are micro-chipped, and cats are checked for feline leukemia.

For animal owners who intend to spay or neuter their pet, the shelter works with the Louisville, Ky. S.N.I.P. (Spay and Neuter Immediately Please) community.

The pets are transported to Kentucky to receive the surgical procedure.

Johnston said that since the shelter began working with S.N.I.P., there have been no problems with transportation or animal health. Approximately 450 pets have been spayed or neutered through the program in an 18 month period, or 25 monthly.

2013 will see  a slight change.

Owners who plan to send their pets to S.N.I.P. will have an opportunity every other month, instead of monthly. The months will be January, March, May, July etc.

More about S.N.I.P. can be found at http://www.kyhumane.org, or by calling the Decatur County Animal Shelter.

People facing financial hardship may ask for financial help and receive vouchers through the S.N.I.P. website.

The shelter cooperates with Greensburg’s two animal clinics, Greensburg Veterinary Clinic (Located on North State Road 3) and Animal Medical Hospital (located on 10th street).

The shelter is located at 1635 West Park Road, and can be contacted at 812-663-9081.
