'Day of Dance' is here again

Greensburg — Decatur County Memorial Hospital’s (DCMH) Spirit of Women will host its Annual Day of Dance event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 23, at Greensburg Elementary School.

Spirit of Women’s Health Assistant Suzanne Miller said this year’s event is “Circus” themed.

The event will include several health-related educational booths, as well as several free screenings, Miller added.

“The free screenings will include screens for neuropathy (which gauge nerve-sensation in the feet — especially important for diabetics), blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, vision and body mass index — among others,” she said.

There will also be information available about the Hospital’s “Focus 10” Screening initiative.

Miller described Focus 10 as a battery of 12 screenings, constituting a “generalized wellness screening.”

Among the 12 screenings included in Focus 10 are screens for abdominal aneurysm, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke risk and thyroid function.

Focus 10 is being offered at DCMH only during the months of February, July and September, Miller said; the cost is $179.

“That’s a real bargain,” she added.

The goal of Day of Dance, Miller explained, is to promote heart health and to “get people up and moving.”

The event will kick of with a “Zumbathon” in the main GES gym. After the kickoff, Miller said, instructors will move to another gym, with around six instructors from Decatur and Ripley Counties conducting nonstop Zumba sessions.

“The kickoff Zumba portion will be free,” Miller said. “The remainder of the day, it will cost $20, with proceeds benefiting New Directions Domestic Abuse Services Center and Ripley County’s Safe Passage.”

Day of Dance will also include a “Hoopdaloop” event, which involves the use of “weighted” hula hoops.

“It’s a terrific core exercise,” Miller said.

There will also be “Get your Dance On” dance demonstrations, hosted by Miss Jill’s School of Dance, she added.

DCMH’s ReCharge initiative will host various activities and fitness demonstrations throughout the day, as well as an exhibition on the main stage.

The day’s featured entertainment will be Cirque Amongus, a group from Michigan that, according to Miller, “performs interactive circus activities with children.”

“Annie [Wilkison] and I recently saw them at an event in Indianapolis while we were trying to decide what to feature for this year’s Day of Dance,” the health assistant explained. “They were very good.”

The group’s appearance will include 10 educational stations and a performance on the main stage.

Miller also stressed that the event’s first 400 attendees will receive a free box lunch after visiting any 12 of the educational booths.

“You’ll want to get there early,” Miller said. “Lunch is on us.”

With a little encouragement from her teacher and from Triple R Owner Debbie Richards, GJHS Eighth Grader Jewel Clarke overcame her fear and saddled up, taking her first horseback ride Wednesday afternoon. Twenty-three-year-old rescued horse Willie is an old hand with kids by now and made a perfect partner for Clarke’s first go in the stirrups.
