They came with cumin and Italian sausage, with tomato sauce, chili sauce and chili powder, too, with Amish herbs and spices, venison, peppers, noodles and onions galore. And of course, they came with beans and beef.
Community leaders from around Greensburg mixed it all together Friday morning to compete and mingle in the fifth annual Greensburg Adult Center Chili Cook Off.
Lt. Rob Duckworth of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department (DCSD) brought along an old recipe from his days in Cincinnati, which, he agreed, might aptly be called Duckworth’s Sweet & Spicy.
Erin Allen, community services representative for Aspen place, prepared her contest entry from an old family recipe passed down from grandma. Adult Center Nutrition Director Diana Robbins pulled a knockoff recipe for Wendy’s Restaurant chili from pininterest.com.
Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen didn’t prepare any chili himself, but instead performed dipping duty for Decatur County Memorial Hospital's entry, a duty that didn’t stop him from sampling 2013’s entries.
Despite heavy competition, (and a three-way tie for second between WTRE, DCMH and Skybird Manor), Greensburg Fire Department Chief Scott Chasteen walked away the winner of Friday’s competition.
Explained Robbins of the chief’s winning recipe, “He told me he went to the store last night and walked the aisles, looking for ingredients he thought would be good in chili. He told me he wouldn’t have a prayer of duplicating his recipe.”
For his winning entry, Chasteen, who Robbins called a master of “chili smack talk,” took home a mug full of assorted candy from Premiere Hospice and a $25 gift card.
For $5 each, attendees to the Cook Off walked a line, with each of 13 petite bowls being filled by the entrants. After sampling each of the entries, attendees cast their votes, giving Chasteen the victory by a single vote.
Proceeds from the well-attended event will be split evenly between the Greensburg Adult Center and Aging & Community Services of South Central Indiana, Robbins said. Aging & Community Services, she added, runs the Center’s nutrition program, serving lunch at the facility Monday through Friday.
“Due to state budget cuts, that number will be cut to Monday, Wednesday and Thursday April 1,” the director said. “Hopefully, though, when the current fiscal year ends on June 30, we’ll be able to return to daily lunches.”
She stressed, however, that the Chili Cook Off isn’t held because of the budget shortage and that neither does the current “budget sequester” in Washington D.C. have any bearing on the shortage.
