80 GJHS students receive "Junior Honors"

Greensburg — Eighty Greensburg Junior High School (GJHS) seventh- and- eighth-graders and their families, friends and teachers braved a snowstorm Tuesday evening for Greensburg Junior High School’s (GJHS) annual Junior Honor Society Induction night.

New inductees Haleigh Elise Reed, Landyn Joseph Mann, Rileigh Anastacia Dickson, Cara Jacobs and Jadrian Woods, respectively, gave brief, self-written presentations on the meanings of Service, Leadership, Character, Scholarship and Citizenship. Those qualities form the Society’s core philosophy.

Fifth-year GJHS Social Studies teacher Matt Cochran served as master of ceremonies.

Looking out at the packed auditorium as the snow swirled outside, Cochran lauded the school’s recent ‘A’ rating from Indiana’s Department of Education. That rating, he stressed, was, in large measure, made possible by the 80 bright, inquisitive young minds inducted Tuesday night.

Greensburg Community Schools Superintendent Tom Hunter delivered the keynote address.

Hunter opened with a brief essay by Abraham Lincoln, offering some of the 16th president’s thoughts on prosperity, class, wealth and character.

Hunter charged the youngsters to live with integrity and vigor and to “live your life so that it has meaning.” He further advised them live to “make other people better human beings,” always striving to “help other people.”

After the ceremonies, first-year Junior Honor Society Advisor and Language Arts Teacher Sarah Wheeler, praised the new inductees as a “very bright group of kids.”

“They’re all so witty and clever,” she said. “They catch on to things extremely quickly. We’re reading the same book in my classes this year as I did with my students last year, but it’s a completely different experience with these kids. They bring their own unique, insightful perspectives to the written word. They’re an absolute joy to teach. They make it easy to love my job. I look forward to coming to work every day, excited about what they have in store for me.”
