Baby Chique Boutique has received $10,000 from the Alma Taylor Foundation’s building improvement grant.
The grant money will go entirely to sewer system repairs that shop owner, Sonya Miller, said were much needed. The Main Street program has also given Baby Chique Boutique a grant in which to install new windows, preferably before the weather stays cold.
“It’s not just us,” said Miller, “This whole area needs work.”
In addition to the repairs expected on the sewer system, Baby Chique Boutique will be having a makeover, nearly a year after its establishment in 2011.
The store will be getting new downstairs flooring and a fresh coat of paint.
Upstairs is empty, said Miller, but a bathroom and new electrical works will be installed.
Miller said she has been approached by photographers and artists who are interested in the plentiful natural lighting.
Miller intends to change the upstairs into a working studio for artists who would like to rent the space.
The Alma Taylor Foundation gives grants to downtown businesses in need of renovations and improvements.
Normally, the grant is $10,000, though exceptions have been made for businesses such as Game Plan Graphics, and the Hair Factory, which share a building.
The two businesses received a joint $20,000 to repair the front bricking of the building last year.
Baby Chique Boutique will be closed until February, when the renovations are expected to be completed.
Baby Chique Boutique is located at 110 E Washington St, on the courthouse square, and sells baby-related toys and clothing.
