Ceremony “tops out” Phase I of DCMH construction project

MainSource donates $100,000 to Campaign Committee

Greensburg — A small crowd of Decatur County Memorial Hospital officials and other local dignitaries gathered outside the facility for a special ceremony Thursday afternoon.

Construction crew members delicately placed the final beam atop what will soon become two brand new floors dedicated to improving DCMH patient care.

The beam itself housed an American flag, a DCMH flag and a small evergreen tree. Awash in the signatures of DCMH employees who generously donated to the project, it took less than eight minutes for the beam to reach its lofty resting place. Once it had, cheers erupted from the cold crowd far below.

The event went off without a hitch and served as a literal “topping out” for a busy day at DCMH.

Moments prior, the hospital’s Campaign Committee received a donation of $100,000 from MainSource Bank, much of which will benefit Phase II of the ongoing construction project.

Thursday’s construction effort capped off an addition of what will eventually house 22 new patient rooms equipped with full baths, a family waiting area, an Advanced Care Unit and much more in a 29,000 square foot project expected to reach completion in August.

The morning saw the official beginning of the DCMH 2013 Capital Campaign during which hospital staff hope to reach a funding raising goal of $1.25 million.

DCMH CEO Linda Simmons joined several other hospital officials and members of MainSource for the check donation shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, then took some time to offer comments on the donation as well as the construction project as a whole.

Simmons said the donation was “just phenomenal” and stood as “a true testament” to the caring and concern shown each day by DCMH staff.

“It’s a wonderful milestone,” said Simmons.

MainSource Bank President and CEO Daryl Tressler called the hospital “a major component of economic development.”

David Fry, DCMH Director of Community Relations, said the events of the day were positive not only for the hospital but also for the community, due to the important role fulfilled by DCMH in Decatur County.

Fry said DCMH has achieved approximately 57 percent of its financial goal for the construction projects thus far.

When the formalities had ended, guests were invited to enjoy free food and cake amid a conference room decorated with “Caution” tape and construction cones — festive reminders that much work on the multi-million dollar hospital expansion remains.

And though the DCMH expansion projects remain a good distance from finished (Phase II is expected to be completed in late 2014), that reality couldn’t dull Thursday’s celebratory atmosphere.

“It’s a tremendous day,” said Fry, “for the hospital and for the community.”
