The Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) Spirit of Women were in high spirits Tuesday evening as women who received mammograms partook in a spa party, pizza and a movie.
2012 was the third year for the “Mammothon,” an event designed to encourage women to receive mammograms while still having fun. Following the day of mammograms, for $10, women were treated to hand scrubs and Mary Kay Satin Hands, massages, cupcake decorating, nail polish, and facials at DCMH.
The back of the room had a table filled with sugary goodies such as pink punch, brownies and trail mix. Following the spa party was a movie, Because I Said So, with Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, and pizza.
Annie Wilkison, Spirit of Women coordinator, said around 50 women received mammograms as part of the Mammothon this year. Of course, Wilkison said, Spirit of Women does more than 50 mammograms a year, but this year’s Mammothon was comparable to last year’s.
“More women are joining Spirit of Women this year,” Wilkison said.
She hopes more women will understand the importance of conducting yearly exams after the age of 40.

Anna Burkhart and her aunt, Jenny Burkhart, both sat for a haircut at Magic Act Salon and Day Spa Saturday afternoon. Both Decatur County residents elected to donate several inches of their hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that fashions hairpieces for children suffering long-term hair loss.
