NDHS Drama Club going “Into the Woods”

Greensburg — The North Decatur High School (NDHS) Drama Department will perform the musical “Into the Woods” from 7 to 9:45 p.m., March 8 to 9, in the school cafeteria; a Sunday matinée will be staged from 2 to 3:45 p.m., March 10, also at the school.

The play officially opened Thursday night.

NDHS Choral and Drama Director Dan Borns called the play a dark perspective on “happily ever after.”

According to Borns, the play includes a number of well-known, beloved characters from Grimm’s Fairytales, including Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, the Witch, The Baker and the Baker’s Wife, Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters, and Cinderella and Rapunzel’s respective Princes.

The production also includes appearances from lesser-known Grimm’s characters, such as Cinderella’s biological mother and father.

“It sort of mixes all these fairy tale characters and their stories together,” Borns explained. “And they go off 'Into the Woods' to find their happily ever afters.”

By the end of the first act, the director added, all the characters have found exactly what they were looking for and dreaming of — or so they think.

“The first act of our show is pretty family friendly,” Borns said. “But in the second act, things get kind of dark.”

“That’s when things get real,” he continued, “Life sets in and the characters start to realize that happily ever after might not be all it’s cracked up to be.”

Borns expects that the play will hold several surprises for the initiated viewer.

“This one’s a little different compared to many of the shows you might usually see in Decatur County,” he said. “It’s not as immediately recognizable to folks around here as something like ‘The Sound of Music’ or ‘The Music Man.’”

Borns called the production’s music complex and a challenge to play and sing.

“There are times during this show when audiences will be forced to think outside the box,” he said. “There a lots of layers and symbolism here. Everybody’s always looking for that certain something in life, that idealized dream or perfect life. This play cautions the view to be careful what you wish for.”

Tickets to “Into the Woods” are available at the door for $6 for students and $8 for adults. Borns cautioned, however, that his Friday and Saturday shows are nearly sold out. Theatre-goers might want to call for advance tickets.

“If we run out of seats, that’s the great thing about doing a show here,” Borns said, “we can always add more chairs.”
