Diabetes Carnival draws a crowd

New Point — The sixth annual Diabetes “Carnival for a Cure” brought a steady stream of fun-loving folks to the New Point Community Building Saturday — and by the time it had ended, the event had raised $3,300 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Organizer Wendy Bohman stated she was happy with the turn-out, which brought myriad kids and adults to the small community for a few hours of games and fun aimed at raising money toward diabetes research. Those who stopped by the New Point Community Building could take shots at targets with a NERF gun, fling plush Angry Birds characters from a slingshot, try out a Price is Right-inspired “Plinko” game, and even attempt to sink a putt or two in miniature golf. Participants earned tokens that could be redeemed for small prizes.

Participants could also purchase tickets that were placed into drawings for sought-after gift baskets as well as items such as a Kindle Fire, iPad Mini and small High-Definition TV.

The carnival included a variety of homemade cookies, cupcakes and other baked goods, while several children sported fake mustaches and wore silly hats in the carnival spirit.

Bohman said she is happy to have seen the program grow so quickly over the course of the last six years, and noted the carnival raised more money this year than last. In the near future, Bohman said she hopes to partner with Decatur County Memorial Hospital in some capacity, in the hopes that one day the carnival may be able to incorporate screenings for diabetes.

The ultimate goal of the event was to raise money for the JDRF, Bohman said, though spreading awareness — especially of Type I Diabetes — and educating the public on the autoimmune disease are also of great importance. Bohman organizes the carnival alongside friends Kandi Wesseler and Robin Allen. All three have children with Type I Diabetes.

But Saturday’s focus was equally aimed at hosting a fun time for all community members, who appeared to revel in the many games and activities on display. Especially happy were the prizewinners listed below:
