Inmate escapes from Rush County Jail

Suspect remains at large

Rushville — The hunt is on for former Decatur County resident Tony R. Shreve, who escaped from the Rush County Jail Saturday morning.

Rush County Sheriff Jeff Sherwood said Shreve, 35, had been an inmate at the Rush County Jail since October, facing a charge of automobile theft. Now, Shreve faces additional charges following his escape shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday.

“He had been incarcerated locally since Oct. 22, 2012, following his arrest on a local (Rush County) warrant for automobile theft. His trial date was rapidly approaching at the time of his escape,” Sherwood said.

The sheriff continued by saying that prior to fleeing, Shreve had been a model inmate and has been serving as an inmate worker for some time.

A jail inmate can have their jail sentence reduced by staying out of trouble while incarcerated, if they were not arrested on a violent crime, and if they express a desire to work. If then selected by the jail staff, the individual can become an inmate worker and do chores around the jail and periodic work details outside the jail.

“I guess it just goes to show that you can never be too trustworthy. After all, this is a jail and the inmates are in here for untrustworthy reasons,” Sherwood said.

At the time of his escape, Shreve and other inmate workers were bringing the noon meal into the jail from the Rush Memorial Hospital delivery van during a brief work detail; it was then that Shreve walked to a waiting nearby vehicle and sped off with an accomplice (later identified as Amie Dawn Hernandez, 24, of Shelbyville).

A witness said they noticed a white female sitting inside a parked gold 1998 Nissan Altima four door sedan (Ohio temporary plate dealer tag X088925 expiring March 15, 2013) prior to the escape.

The unidentified witness continued by telling investigators that the inmate appeared to be motioning toward a female who then pulled up alongside Shreve prior to him jumping in the front passenger seat and the vehicle speeding off southbound through an alley.

Sherwood said that due to the nature of the escape it was definitely a planned event and one that will have implications on future inmate worker details.

In the past, inmate workers assisted with work details at the county courthouse and with the city parks department. Those work details are now in jeopardy, according to Sherwood.

Shreve is described a white male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, 140 pounds with blue eyes and short brown hair.

Hernandez (who also goes by the name Ashley Prez) is described as 5 feet tall, 140 pounds with long brown or possibly dyed blond hair.

An extensive search of the area and surrounding counties following the escape was conducted by the Rush County Sheriff's Department, Rushville Police Department and the Indiana State Police and failed to locate the suspects. They were still at large at press time Monday.

As a result of fleeing custody, Shreve is now facing a felony charge of escape.

Hernandez, who was on house arrest at the time on unspecified charges, is also facing felony charges as a result of the escape.

Investigators believe the pair may have left the state and are possibly heading to West Virgina or Florida.
