Centerstone awarded grant from Community Foundation

Grant provides low-income children and families with funding assistance

Greensburg — Centerstone, a not-for-profit organization providing a wide range of mental health and addiction services, announced Thursday that it has received a $2,500 grant from the Community Foundation of

Decatur County.

These funds will advance the mission of Centerstone’s Strengthening Our Children project in Decatur County, which is designed to help increase access to mental healthcare for low-income children and families experiencing serious emotional disturbances.

Families who engage in the Strengthening Our Children project work in partnership with a Centerstone counselor to assess their needs, create a treatment plan and discuss financial burdens and solutions. In 2011, Centerstone served 322 Decatur County children and their families.

Approximately 50 children needed intensive interventions that the Strengthening Our Children project could provide, such as: temporary childcare assistance to help a parent find or maintain employment, cleaning supplies and homemaker services to improve living conditions, transportation assistance to and from therapeutic activities and appointments, temporary utilities assistance or a one-time assistance payment for housing to prevent homelessness.

“Strengthening Our Children helps remove some of the financial barriers that prevent low-income children and their families from seeking recovery,” said Mary Garvey, MA, LMFT, Centerstone Child and Family

Services Manager.

“By developing personalized healthcare plans, we givethese families the tools and opportunities to concentrate on their mental health and emotional well-being so they can live healthier, more productive lives.”

Goals of the Strengthening Our Children project include:

* Fewer days for children in out-of-home placements

* Improvements in kids’ school attendance and grades

* Fewer discipline referrals among participants

* An increase in participation in families’ community activities to enhance self-esteem, family bonds and social relationships.

In order to be eligible for Strengthening Our Children, participants must be Decatur County residents, under or currently the age of 18 years old, experiencing mental health issues, and from a low-income family.

With a little encouragement from her teacher and from Triple R Owner Debbie Richards, GJHS Eighth Grader Jewel Clarke overcame her fear and saddled up, taking her first horseback ride Wednesday afternoon. Twenty-three-year-old rescued horse Willie is an old hand with kids by now and made a perfect partner for Clarke’s first go in the stirrups.
