Famed “musher” giving free talk at YMCA

Greensburg — The Decatur County family YMCA will host a free talk by famed Iditarod dog-sled racer and Indianapolis native Karen Land at 4 p.m., Monday, Jan. 7, at the YMCA, located at 1301 West Kathys Way.

YMCA Marketing and Membership Coordinator Stephanie Hagerty told the Daily News that the Iditarod is a grueling, 1,150-mile, annual long-distance sled-dog race running from Anchorage, Ala. to Nome, Ala. The mushers, Hagerty added, follow the historic trails of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, which were used for winter travel before the advent of modern roadways and transportation.

According to event materials, Land’s presentation will focus on her experiences in the race. According to Land’s website (www.mymusher.com), she has competed in the Iditarod three times: 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Hagerty described the Iditarod as “the last great race.”

According to Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org), in the Iditarod, “Mushers and a team of 12 to 16 dogs, of which at least six must be on the towline at the finish line, cover the [1,150-mile] distance in nine to 15 days.”

The article continues, “Teams frequently race through blizzards causing whiteout conditions, sub-zero temperatures and gale-force winds, which can cause the wind chill to reach 100 °F (73 °C).”

The Iditarod distance, according to Land’s website, is roughly “the same distance as a trip from Indianapolis, Ind. to Miami, Fla.”

Land’s website further characterizes public speaking as the veteran musher’s “other true love” and states that she’s writing “several books based on her Iditarod adventures.” Land also writes for a number of newspapers and magazines, and maintains and designs her own website.
