Bartholomew County —
An alcohol-related incident in Bartholomew County led to the arrest of a Decatur County Sheriff’s deputy early Wednesday.
According to Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department Major Todd Noblitt, Deputy Doug Pittman was arrested early Wednesday morning on Base Road, near State Road 46 in Bartholomew County. Pittman, 38, was booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on charges of operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) over .15, public intoxication, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in property damage. Major Noblitt told the Daily News that Pittman’s BAC was tested at .16, which is twice the legal limit (.08) allowed when operating a motor vehicle. All three charges are misdemeanors. Pittman was not on duty at the time of the incident, Noblitt said.
Pittman was arrested in his personal vehicle, a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck, following a search by Bartholomew County deputies for a suspicious vehicle in the area of State Road 46 and Base Road shortly after midnight Wednesday.
A firearm was confiscated from the vehicle following the deputy’s arrest. The weapon was then remanded to Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen, who assisted at the scene with Lt. Eric Blodgett. Major Noblitt could not confirm whether or not the gun in the vehicle was Pittman’s police issued firearm.
Investigators believe Pittman was involved in a single-vehicle accident causing undisclosed property damage in the area of County Road 850 East and County Road 50 North in Bartholomew County. Investigators recovered a bumper that appears to be a match for Pittman’s Dodge Ram.
Commenting on the case, Major Noblitt called the alleged act “a bad decision” that “sets a poor example.”
“Law enforcement officers aren’t above the law,” he added.
Pittman spent the night in jail, then posted bond in the amount of $505 cash Wednesday morning. He has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation by Sheriff Allen.
Deputy Pittman joined the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department in 2011 and serves as the county’s canine officer.
