New Point —
Investigators with the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department are actively searching for an as-yet unidentified man alleged to have robbed a New Point convenience store late Tuesday.
According to Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen, deputies from his department were dispatched to the New Point Food Mart shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday in reference to an emergency call claiming a robbery had taken place. The convenience store clerk told police an approximately 5’10” white male with a thin build entered the store and demanded money from the cash register. The clerk said the suspect stated he had a knife within the camouflage coat he was wearing at the time of the robbery.
The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the thief, who then ran from the store southward, across State Road 46.
The robbery is being investigated by Sheriff’s Lt. Eric Blodgett, Deputy Derek Fasnaught and New Point Town Marshal Andy Hadler.
An Indiana State Police Canine Officer was deployed at the scene Tuesday in an attempt to track the suspect. Sheriff Allen said the investigation was ongoing Wednesday.
The Daily News spoke with a Food Mart employee Tuesday who declined to comment until the case is resolved.
Allen mentioned similar incidents have recently occurred in Napoleon and Batesville. Investigators are uncertain at this point as to whether or not a connection may exist among the three reported robberies.
The sheriff encouraged anyone with information to call his department at 812-663-8125 or the anonymous tip line at 812-222-TIPS (8477).
