The Greensburg Police Department (GPD) is keeping an eye on a text message phishing scam that targets customers of MainSource Bank.
The text messages to MainSource customers state the person’s bank account ATM card has been temporarily deactivated. It then instructs the intended victim to call the number provided in the text message in order to reactivate the card.
When calling the number, the customer is instructed to enter their account number and PIN number. After doing so, the customer is informed that his or her account has been reactivated before being disconnected. GPD investigators believe the parties responsible for the scam use this information to steal money from MainSource customer accounts. This text message has also been received by some individuals who are not MainSource customers.
“What these people are doing,” said Chief of Police Stacey Chasteen through a press release, “is called ‘phishing.’ Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.”
The chief said communications such as these pretend to come from social networking websites, online auction sites, online payment processors and other reputable outlets.
MainSource Bank is aware of the scam as well, and the bank’s website hosted several links in regards to the scam Thursday. The MainSource website states the text message comes from “msb@vtext.com” or the phone number 812-614-9348.
MainSource is asking customers to ignore the text, noting the bank will not ask customers for personal information over the phone. Customers are also encouraged to contact their local MainSource branch as soon as the message is received.
The website offers tips and lists a customer service phone number at 800-713-6083.
Chief Chasteen also suggested contacting the bank as well as local law enforcement.
“The Greensburg Police Department wants to caution everyone about giving out personal information to anyone who you are not familiar with, especially over the phone,” Chasteen said. “If you are a victim of any such crime, please contact your bank and the local authorities as soon as possible.”
