2nd grader left on school bus in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Officials of a Lafayette-area school district plan to fire a substitute bus driver who they say left a sleeping second-grader on board at the district’s bus yard.

The girl woke up within about an hour Tuesday afternoon and walked to a nearby Walgreens store, where workers called police. Temperatures were in the mid teens at the time.

The Tippecanoe School Corp.’s transportation director says surveillance video showed the driver didn’t check for any missing students before leaving the bus. Chris Daughtry said that is a violation of district policy and state law.

District officials didn’t release the name of the driver. They say they’ll ask the school board to fire the driver during its meeting next week.
