Greensburg —
The Greensburg girls swimming team made school history by defeating East Central for the first time ever in Tuesday's home opener.
The Lady Pirates beat the Lady Trojans 108-76.
“As far as I can recall and find out, that is the first time our girls have beaten East Central,” said Hawkins. “Our girls swam just phenomenal. The whole team was a part of the win.”
Both Greensburg teams combined to set 23 personal bests on the night.
“That’s phenomenal as a whole,” said first-year Greensburg head coach Josh Hawkins.
The Greensburg boys fell to East Central 120-54. The dual meet was the season opener for the Pirate boys swim team.
Sophomore co-captain Molly Oesterling and freshman Brianna Stagge won two events. Oesterling broke the one-minute barrier in the 100-yard freestyle for the first time, clocking a time of 59.46 seconds. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.83.
Stagge took the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:14.86 and the 500 free in 6:11.16. She shed 12 seconds off her 500 free time.
Junior co-captain Megan McDole won the 200 individual medley in 2:40.64 and took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.91.
Sophomore co-captain Molly Freshman Abby Bausback won the 500 free in 28.29 seconds and placed second in the 100 fly in 1:11.61.
Junior Morgan Stagge tallied a pair of second-place finishes, clocking a 1:15.64 in the 100 backstroke and a 2:26.25 in the 200 free.
“She just swam phenomenal,” said Hawkins of Stagge.
Freshman Alli Duerstock took second in the 50 free in 31.06, and third in the 100 free in 1:10.99.
“Alli Duerstock was instrumental,” said Hawkins of Duerstock, who also swam a leg of the victorious 200-yard medley relay.
In the ninth event of the night, Greensburg’s Kaleigh McGinn tallied a win in one-meter diving. McGinn posted a score of 96.10.
Hawkins said he is pleased with the performance of Greensburg’s lone diver.
“She dove pretty well and got us a win,” he said of McGinn. “That will just be so helpful for us this year, having a good diver. It will be a wonderful thing.”
The Lady Pirates won three of four relays.
The 200 free relay team of Bausback, junior Morgan Springmeyer, Morgan Stagge and Brianna Stagge clocked a winning time of 1:56.81. The ‘B’ team of freshman Alli Duerstock, junior Valeria Martinez, sophomore Ashley Koontz and senior Molly Wilcox took third in 2:15.62.
The 400 free relay team of Bausback, Brianna Stagge, McDole and Oesterling, clocked a winning time of 4:15.67.
Winning the 200 medley relay was the quartet of Morgan Stagge, Duerstock, McDole and Oesterling, with a time of 2:10.81. Placing fourth in 2:37.04 was the ‘B’ team of Koontz, Springmeyer, Martinez and Wilcox.
Hawkins said he is pleased with the commitment that Martinez has shown in practice despite being hurt early in the season.
He also credited Koontz for reducing her 500 free mark by seven seconds.
