The North Decatur boys basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half, but the plays did not go the Chargers' way in a 52-50 loss to visiting Franklin County Friday.
Head coach Kyle Nobbe's squad had to feel good about its chances when senior John Hammersmith deposited two of his team-high 16 points at the foul line with 2:33 left in the game.
A 13-6 fourth-quarter edge was not enough for the home team, though, and the Chargers fell to 3-12 on the season.
Hammersmith shot 6-for-7 from the free throw line, including the game-tying points.
Junior Josh Weintraut scored a career-high 13 points, including three baskets from the 3-point line. Freshman Zach Johnson added 10 to round out the double-digit scoring. Junior Brock Ricke scored four and senior Kevin Geis scored three, while seniors Jason Kirchhoff and Dylan Koors added two apiece.
North shot 10-for-17 (58 percent) from the foul line.
The North junior varsity team put away the Wildcats 40-19 in the first game. Evan Wallpe led North with 10 points in the win. Austin Brown scored eight, while Donovan Meyer scored seven. Matthew Laudick scored four (2-for-2 from the line), while Brian Williamson, Arek Holloway and Eric Moorman each scored three. Rounding out the scoring was Justin Weisenbach with two.
North returns to the hardwood Saturday night with a home game against Knightstown.
