The North Decatur girls basketball team defeated Milan 77-36 Tuesday, running away with a lead and never looking back. North led 19-10 after the first quarter as senior Jenna Meyer's 16 first-half points lifted her team to a 38-22 halftime lead.
North improves to 8-7, climbing over the .500 mark again.
“It was a good team effort,” said junior varsity coach Amy Land, who is substituting for head coach Brad Bryant on varsity.
Senior Cindy Krieger helped expand North’s lead to 23-10, then 28-15 with a rebound basket. Senior Veronica Yager fueled a 13-4 run with four of her own points and the Lady Chargers led 38-22 at the half.
Meyer scored a career-high 32 points, leading 11 different Lady Chargers in the scorebook. She hit 8-for-10 from the foul line. Junior Andrea Volk followed with 14 points, including both of her team's 3-pointers and a 4-for-6 effort at the line. Senior Cindy Krieger scored a season-high eight points. Adding four apiece were senior Veronica Yager and juniors Abby Lamb, Anna Wallpe and Emma Geis. Junior Alison Wallpe added three, while freshman Mary Hughes scored two. Myra Steele and Erin Yager each added one.
North's coaching staff was able to utilize several reserve players.
JV girls outscore Milan 18-3 in second half
North’s junior varsity team won its fourth straight game, beating Milan 35-15 to improve to 9-5 overall. The JV Lady Chargers led 9-2 after the first six minutes, and 17-12 at the half. North held Milan scoreless in the third quarter with a 10-0 edge, and cruised in the fourth quarter 8-3. Laura Haunert led North with 10 points. Alison Wallpe followed with eight, while Morgan McKinney scored five. Samantha Krieger tallied four, while Erin Yager, Morgan Nobbe, Megan Hoover and Ashlyn Weintraut each chipped in two.
