Batesville —
The Greensburg varsity wrestling team visited Batesville Tuesday for a conference showdown against the Bulldogs. Batesville ended up on top, 38-28.
“It was a hard-fought match,” said Greensburg head coach Matt Cochran. “Both teams wrestled with a lot of heart,” said Cochran. “It was an exciting match, but the Pirates did fall short.”
At 113 pounds, Greensburg freshman Brandon Butz tallied an 11-0 major decision victory over Ray Simmons.
Senior Chaz Smiley recorded a forfeit win at 120 pounds for the Pirates.
Batesville’s Ben Westerfeld at 126 pounds defeated Greensburg sophomore Jordan Smiley by major decision.
Greensburg won the next two matches. Freshman Devin Ruble (132) won by pin over Zach Mears, and junior Joel Chase won a tough 9-6 decision over Anthony Gartenman.
The Bulldogs went on to take six of its own matches. Cody Haakinson at 145 pounds won by pin over freshman Dakota Deiwert.
152 Neal Nobbe claimed a 7-1 decision over Joe Buening at 152 pounds.
Matthew Linkel (160) pinned senior John Cook, and Will Amberger pinned senior Justin Dance at 170.
Daniel Howard (182) won a 5-2 decision over junior Colten Black, and Jarett Hooten won the 195-pound class by forfeit.
Greensburg took the two largest weight classes, though. Junior Matt Scheumann won a 4-2 overtime match over Zach Strub (220), and sophomore Nathan Hayes won by pin over Garrett Watkins (285).
John Moody (106) won by major decision over freshman Travis Gauck.
Greensburg next competes this Saturday in the Tri High Super Duals against Tri, Alexandria, Northeastern, Centerville and Daleville. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m.
“We look forward to continuing solid efforts and hope to wrestle extremely well this Saturday,” said Cochran.
