Third quarter problematic for Lady Cougars

Greensburg — The South Decatur girls basketball team surrendered a first-half lead to visiting Morristown and fell to the Yellow Jackets 55-47 Thursday.

The third quarter proved to be problematic for the Lady Cougars. South led by as many as six, at 27-21 in the second quarter, before Morristown jumped ahead and outscored South 25-11 in the third quarter.

Sophomore Megan Niese and junior Ashley Johannigman combined for 14 points in the first quarter, but were quieted the rest of the way by an aggressive and opportunistic Jacket attack.

The closest South drew was within four points at 48-44 with 1:55 left in the third quarter. Junior Julia Miller and Johannigman each scored off turnovers, but the Cougars were unable to convert two later steals into points.

“They came out with intensity right from the start in the warmups,” said South head coach Amy Macy of the Jackets. “We didn’t in the third quarter. They got a lot of second looks. We got outhustled tonight and were a step slow offensively and defensively.”

South committed 23 turnovers on the night.

The Lady Cougars shot 8-for-12 from the foul line.

Julia Miller led South with 15 points. Niese followed with 12. Johannigman scored eight, while senior Sam Miller followed with seven. Scoring two apiece were sophomores Sydney Callahan and Olivia Watkins off the bench.

Macy said she was pleased with the outcome of the Hoopin’ for Heroes fundraiser for the USO, with military present at the game.

“It was definitely a positive success,” said Macy. “We want to thank the military personnel for coming out. We had a good number at the dinner. We appreciate the support and donations.”
