Grapplers compete at Delta Invite

Muncie — The Pirates wrestling team had a rough day at the Delta Invitational, as they went 0-5 on the day.

The Pirates had a solid start to the day with a 39-39 tie with Ft. Wayne North Side, however the Redskins prevailed on the eighth tiebreaker criteria.

From there, the Pirates were unable to overcome forfeits and struggled for the remainder of the day against Delta, Greenwood, Jay County, and Triton.

Sophomores Jordan Smiley and Nathan Hayes led the way for the Pirates by going 4-1 on the day. These were the first ever varsity wins for Hayes and Smiley.

Greensburg head coach Matt Cochran said he “was very pleased with the efforts of Jordan and Nathan.”

Junior Drew Neisius also went 4-1 on Saturday, and junior Joe Buening went 3-2. Neisius’s record is currently 8-1.

“I was happy to see the efforts provided by Joe and Drew,” said Cochran. “Joe wrestled with a lot of heart today and had good results.”

Senior Justin Dance, Joel Chase, and Chaz Smiley each had two wins on the day.

“Overall, this was a very rough day for us,” said Cochran. “We need to regroup. It was difficult not having a full line-up, today. We look forward to getting everybody back so we can make a strong push in the conference.”

The Pirates will wrestle at East Central on Tuesday (tonight). Weigh-Ins are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Final scores:  FW North Side 40, GB 39; Delta 41, GB 22; Greenwood 48, GB 15; Jay County 59, GB 21; Triton 45, GB 29.
