Gatewood signs with Valparaiso

Greensburg — South Decatur senior Matthew Gatewood signed his letter of intent last week to play baseball for Valparaiso University. The signing took place at South Decatur High School.

The left-handed pitcher will pitch for Valparaiso and study sports management.

Present at his signing were his parents, Ruby and Tom, his grandmother, Sandi, his brother, Brandon, and Andy Seegers, his high school baseball coach during his freshman and sophomore years.

Seegers said he never coached a Division I player.

Afterward, Gatewood said he is pleased to represent South as a Division I athlete.

“It doesn’t matter how big of a school you go to,” he said. “If you work hard, everything is possible.”
