Greensburg —
The South Decatur volleyball team won a key conference match Tuesday. The Lady Cougars beat visiting Waldron in four sets, 25-20, 10-25, 25-20, 26-24.
Third-year South head coach Lisa Bennett praised her team for rebounding from the tough loss in the third set, then clinching the fourth set and a close fifth set.
“The girls played a very hard-fought game this evening,” said Bennett. “We fell apart and couldn't pass the ball during the second game, but they showed real determination to overcome that game loss to come back and win the match.”
South overall had one of the best serving performances of the season, serving 81-for-83 (97.6 percent). Lizzy Hedger and Julia Miller each served a team-high 15-for-15 with eight points. Clarissa Baltus served 14-for-14 with seven points and an ace, while Ashley Johannigman served 11-for-12 with a team-high two aces. Sarah Sweet served 14-for-15 with eight points, and Brittany Koors served 12-for-12 with three points.
“We had great serving tonight from the entire team,” said Bennett.
Johannigman led South in hitting, 38-for-48 with 20 kills. Miller hit 21-for-30 with 11 kills, and Baltus hit 22-for-23 with five kills. Hedger added four kills.
“Our hitters had a great night at the net, when we hit the ball they had a hard time picking it up,” said Bennett of South's attack. Baltus passed 61-for-69 with 13 digs. Megan Nieseadded 18 digs.
South set 102-for-105 (97 percent) with 41 assists. Sweet set 49-for-49 with 21 assists, while Koors set 40-for-42 with 19 assists.
“Overall, I was very pleased with our team tonight,” said Bennett. “Of course we have some room for improvement, but it was a much better team out on the court tonight, compared to the team that showed up last week to play.”
