Greensburg —
The Greensburg boys basketball team did not stray from character in capturing a conference title with an 86-58 win over visiting Franklin County Thursday.
The Pirates improved to 9-0 in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference and 18-0 with two games remaining.
Earlier in the week, the Associated Press voted Greensburg the state's top-ranked team in Class 3A, bumping Muncie Central off its perch. Head coach Stacy Meyer said it gives something for people to talk about, except for the Pirates.
"As a team, we haven't talked about it," he said. "It's good for the kids. They deserve it."
Greensburg played like a champion in the first quarter, doubling up the Wildcats for an 18-9 edge. The advantage became 38-24 at the half.
The Pirates scored the first four points of the second half and maintained a 20-point margin for most of the third quarter.
Meyer sat the starters for much of the fourth period, as Greensburg tallied successive 24-point quarters. Freshman starter Ryan Welage scored six points in a two-minute span early in the fourth. Sophomore Tom Lawrence added five points off the bench and junior Shane Ploeger added three.
Ten scorers inked the book for the Pirates. Sophomore Byrant McIntosh led Greensburg with 21 points and shot 4-for-4 from the foul line. Junior Collin Rigney added 14 points and two 3-pointers. Senior Iven Stewart followed with 13, while Welage and senior Clayton Tressler each added nine. Sophomore Sean Sellers shot 3-for-3 from the stripe and scored five points. Sophomore Macy Holdsworth chipped in four, while junior Tyler Burcham added three.
Greensburg shot 18-for-23 from the foul line.
"We still have two more games," said Meyer of Wednesday's home game against South Ripley, which is Senior Night, and a road game at East Central. "It's always difficult to play East Central on the road. We're looking forward to that."
Meyer added that he was pleased to see his team's hustle for 32 minutes, evidenced by senior Clayton Tressler's dive for a loose ball going out of bounds in the fourth quarter.
"That exemplifies what our team stands for," he said.
Senior Cody Steele led the Wildcats with 19 points and senior Kyle VanMeter added 16.

Sophomore Tom Lawrence once again led the Pirates, hitting a trio of triples on his way to 18 points. Riley Billieu followed with eight points. Patrick Hayden, Brad Wilson, Riley Burkert and Elliott Green each scored six points. Shane Ploeger and Tye Fleetwood each added two.
