Greensburg —
The North Decatur boys basketball team concluded the regular season Friday by honoring its four seniors on Senior Night. The Chargers celebrated the careers of Kevin Geis, John Hammersmith, Jason Kirchhoff and Dylan Koors.
North fell to Class 3A Rushville 65-59, capping the season with a 4-16 record.
The teams found themselves in a low-scoring encounter in the first half. The score was knotted at 9-all with less than three minutes left in the first quarter, until Hammersmith’s 3-pointer gave North a 12-9 lead near the 1:15 mark. The Lions’ Cameron Cox, though, converted a 3-point play to tie it at 12-all to end the first quarter.
Kirchhoff scored to give North a two-point lead at 14-all near the six-minute mark of the second period, but Rushville responded with a 4-2 run to take back the advantage. Nate Hoeing’s conventional 3-point play made it 18-16 favoring the visitors about halfway through the second quarter. However, North still led 27-26 at the half.
The Lions took control of the game with a 17-10 third-quarter edge, and the seven-point margin proved to be the difference.
Kirchhoff led North with a career-high 23 points, and the first time he broke the 20-point barrier. Kirchhoff hit 15-for-18 (83 percent) from the foul line, leading North’s 20-for-25 (80 percent) effort at the stripe.
Hammersmith followed with 19 points, including 4-for-5 at the line and a 3-pointer. Freshmen Zach Johnson and Dayne Lecher each added six points, while Kevin Geis chipped in five (including a triple).
Rushville’s junior varsity team defeated North despite a fourth-quarter comeback from the Chargers. The Lions led 15-9 after the first quarter and 17-13 at the half. Rushville expanded the lead with a 12-4 third quarter, going into the final period with a 29-17 lead. The Chargers, though, exploded for 21 points. However, Rushville’s 10 points was just enough to squeak by.
Evan Wallpe again led his team, scoring 15 points. Austin Brown and Donovan Meyer each scored eight, including two triples apiece, while Landon Crites added his own triple. Arek Holloway and Eric Moorman each chipped in two points.
