Brookville —
The Greensburg girls soccer team to Franklin County to face the Lady Wildcats and came home with a 2-1 win.
"This was a well deserved game for the kids to win," said Greensburg head coach Jason Bryant. "We have been playing really good soccer for the past two weeks and finally got a win. We play in a strong conference and it is always nice to get a conference win."
According to Bryant, Greensburg came out sluggish but shrugged off a slow start.
"We had a problem of being a tad lazy to start the game, but managed to get out of that funk about halfway through the half," he said.
Franklin County got on the board first on a pretty good shot.
"We just did not step to the ball quick enough, and she found the back of the net," said Bryant.
The Lady Pirates held FC to only two shots on goal in the first, and one resulted in a goal. They settled down and started to control possession in the middle of the field, which lead to an equalizer by Pirate senior Ellen Weigel.
Greensburg entered intermission tied at one apiece.
Bryant said the Piraets controlled the tempo in the second half.
"We were much more aggressive in winning the 50-50 balls on our half of the field," he said. "We talked about winning loose balls at halftime and the girls stepped their effort in the second half."
The go-ahead goal was scored by senior Hannah Doerflinger. She put the ball in the back of the net after a scramble for the ball in the 18-yard box.
It was a calm finish to say the least," said Bryant. "There was a lot of traffic in the from of the net."
Greensburg held them to only one shot the entire second half while managing to get 10 shots.
"The kids battled back from a deficit, which is a very good thing to see," said Bryant. "They were not rattled by going down 1-0. They just worked harder and played our style of soccer and it paid off for us."
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Martin had two saves and faced three shots on the night.
"We had quality games from a few kids tonight," said Bryant. "Ellen Weigel had a solid game. She was everywhere for us tonight. Tara Hartwell had a really good game as well. She made some quality runs from the defensive side of the ball to help the offense. Alexis Bailey also had a strong game tonight."
Greensburg travels to East Central next Tuesday to play the EIAC opponent Trojans.
