Greensburg Graduate Lifting Knights To New Height

A 2008 Greensburg High School graduate has been recognized for establishing herself as a formidable force on the Kentucky Christian University women’s volleyball team.

KCU sophomore April Hershauer has been named the Player of the Week in Division II of the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association. She received the honor for the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20. Hershauer received the same honor as a freshman and has been an outstanding contributor to the Knights’ program throughout her career.

The Knights charged to 11 straight wins in the middle of the season, on its way to enjoying the lead in the NCCAA Division II Mideast Region. KCU has won five straight matches going into tonight’s home match against Cincinnati Christian University in Grayson.

Hershauer, who is studying elementary education, finished the week with 70 kills (130 attempts/seven errors) and a hitting percent of .485. Her three aces were tallied while serving at a .913 clip.

“It’s awesome,” she said of the award. “It shows that I keep my standards up.”

Defensively, she recorded 33 digs and 15 service receptions. She also had 16 solo and five assisted blocks. Hershauer was an integral part of winning all four matches that Kentucky Christian played, including a 32-kill and five-block performance against Moody Bible Institute, the NCAA Division II No. 2 Power Point-rated team.

Hershauer set two program records in her first season with the Lady Knights. She surpassed the previous kills mark by a staggering 87, which now stands at 539, and established an attack percentage of .350.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of coaches get me to where I am today.”

KCU has a chance to reach the 20-win level this week, which she said she looks forward to helping her team achieve.

She has set her sights on helping KCU establish its goals of excelling at the NCCAA Division II Mideast Regional at the end of the month, and qualifying for the national tournament next month. The Knights hold the No. 1 seed in the upcoming regional tournament.
