North boys tally conference road win

Chargers win 62-45

The North Decatur boys basketball team picked up a big win Thursday night, running away from host Southwestern (Shelby) 62-45.

The Chargers led the entire game, other than a 13-all tie at the end of the first quarter. The Chargers carried leads of 40-26, then 47-33 in the second half. North prevailed on the strength of an 18-8 second-quarter advantage and a balanced offensive attack.

North senior John Hammersmith led North with 21 points, including 3-for-4 at the foul line. Senior Jason Kirchhoff scored 13 (team-high three 3-pointers and 2-for-2 at the line). Junior Brock Ricke scored eight points and freshman Dayne Lecher scored five (one triple). Senior Kevin Geis and freshman Evan Wallpe each scored four, with Wallpe adding a score to end the game.

North shot 9-for-11 from the foul line and made five 3-pointers.

The Chargers improve to 4-14 overall and 3-4 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference, going into tonight’s MHC showdown against county rival South Decatur at North.

North’s junior varsity squad won 44-41 in two overtimes, after trailing 12-4 at the first stop. The Chargers ran off a 19-8 rally to lead 23-20 at the half. Shelby went ahead by one point, 29-28, at the third stop and the game was tied at 35-all at the end of regulation.

The JV rivals each scored two points in the first overtime, making it 37-all going into the second extra session. North outscored the Spartans 7-4 in the second overtime to prevail.

Four Chargers scored in the win, with two in double-figures. Evan Wallpe led his team with 17 points, including 3-for-4 at the foul line. Arek Holloway followed with 16, including a trio of 3-pointers. Luke Badgley added nine (two treys) and Austin Brown chipped in two.
