Jimmie Johnson took the lead after the last caution flag, and held on to win Sunday’s 55th annual Daytona 500. It was the five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion’s second victory in the NASCAR season-opening race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished second, followed by veteran Mark Martin, 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski, Ryan Newman, Greg Biffle, Regan Smith, pole-sitter Danica Patrick, Michael McDowell, and J.J. Yeley rounding out the top 10.
Johnson’s second Daytona 500 win ironically came in his 400th NASCAR Sprint Cup start, and was his 61st career win.
The five-time champ commented on Sunday’s big win.
“There is no better way to start the season than to win the Daytona 500,” he said. “I’m a very lucky man to have won it twice.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series now travels to Phoenix for the second race of the 2013 season.
