Greensburg — The girls basketball teams from the county high schools wrapped up regular season play Thursday night at South Decatur.
North Decatur defeated South 55-32 after the Lady Cougars celebrated Senior Night in front of a large, festive crowd.
South recognized Courtney Apperson, Nicole Dougherty, Chellsey Hermesch, Kristin Kirchner, Bri Palmer and Alexis Watts after the conclusion of the junior varsity game.
North seniors Jill Hammersmith and Hayley Hayden opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers to put South back on its heels.
The Lady Chargers led 14-7 on freshman Jenna Meyer’s basket before the first quarter ended.
Senior Courtney Apperson pulled South to within five, but North responded with an 18-5 run that spanned the second quarter. Sophomore Heather Hayden scored four straight points. South answered when Palmer drained a 3-pointer at the 4:40 mark, reducing the deficit to single digits.
Meyer scored nine points in the spurt and North senior Melissa White ended the first half with a trey before the buzzer. North led 32-14 at the half.
“We made some mistakes and got behind early,” said South head coach Doug Einhaus. “We came out with a lot of emotion, and maybe too much emotion led to making mistakes.”
The Chargers outscored the Cougars 23-18 in the second half on its way to the 55-32 final.
“We’re proud of these kids,” said North head coach Julie Record. “Before the season began, we didn’t think we would do as well as we did. We just have one more thing to do – win the sectional. We have an excellent opportunity to do it.”
Meyer led all scorers with 12, while Hayley Hayden and Hammersmith scored nine apiece. Hayden scored six points in the third quarter. Junior Amelia Daeger and Heather Hayden scored eight each, while junior Katie Closser added four. White scored three and junior Kelly Schwering added a jumper early in the third quarter.
Palmer led South with eight points. Freshman Sam Miller scored seven points, while junior Ashley Lewellyn and Apperson scored six apiece. Kirchner scored two, while junior Ashleigh Ewing added one.
“I wish these girls a lot of luck in the future,” said Einhaus of the seniors. “This is a great group of girls. My kids always give a lot of effort. We just couldn’t get some shots to fall.”
The game counted in the Mid-Hoosier Conference standings. North finishes the season 13-7 (5-3 in MHC), while South finishes at 3-17 (1-7 in MHC).
The North junior varsity team beat the Cougars in the first game, 26-25. South led late in the game on a 9-2 third-quarter run, but the Lady Chargers came from behind late in the fourth to claim the win.
Claire Smith led the junior varsity Chargers with eight points, while Veronica Yager added six. Scoring four apiece were Cindy Krieger, Taylor Chance and Katelin Schomber.
Jesse Walls led South with eight points, while RayAnn Noble scored five. Sarah Sweet and Taylor Nolting scored four each, while Ashleigh Ewing and Becky Hardebeck added two apiece.
North will play South Ripley in the Switzerland County Sectional 44 tournament Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
South will play Jac-Cen-Del, which hosts Sectional 60 next week. The Lady Cougars tip off the opening game against the Eagles Tuesday at 7 p.m.
