North eighth grade boys win MHC

Shelbyville — The eighth grade boys basketball team from North Decatur ended their season last Saturday, Jan. 28, by cutting down the nets at Southwestern Shelby High School as Mid-Hoosier Conference Champs. They won the tournament by beating Morristown 51-26 in the semi-final game, and then by beating Edinburgh 44-39 in the championship game.

In the semi-final victory over Morristown, North Decatur was led by Zach Johnson with 12 points and Evan Wallpe with 11 points, who both dominated play on the inside. Also scoring for the Chargers was Donovan Meyer with seven, Devon Murray and Andrew Hocker each with five, Landon Crites had four, Luke Badgley chipped in with three, and Dayne Lecher and Arek Holloway rounded out the scoring with two points each.

In the championship game, Edinburgh jumped out to a 10-4 lead after one quarter and also led at halftime 18-17. The Lancers increased their lead to nine points by taking a 32-23 lead into the fourth quarter. That is when the Chargers caught fire and made their move behind a pair of 3-pointers by Andrew Hocker, and one each by Dayne Lecher and Arek Holloway, to outscore Edinburgh 21-7 in the fourth and win the championship 44-39.

Andrew Hocker led the Chargers with 14 points on four 3-pointers. Zach Johnson and Dayne Lecher each scored nine points. Evan Wallpe had five points, Arek Holloway scored four and Donovan Meyer had three. A big key to the victory was the defensive efforts by Arek Holloway and Zach Johnson, who did an outstanding job slowing down Edinburgh's leading scorer. Also, Dayne Lecher finished with several assists to help lead the Chargers.

The Chargers finished the season 13-2 and won their last 11 games of the season. In the eight games leading up to the championship, North outscored their opponents in 31 of the 32 quarters.

"It was a great accomplishment for our kids to win the championship by coming back from a 9-point deficit starting the fourth quarter," said coach Mike Blauvelt. "During the regular season, Edinburgh beat us in double overtime after we led them by nine points going into the fourth quarter, so it was nice to turn the tables on them. This is a special group of kids and it was a blessing and a privilege to coach them for two years. They have a bright future ahead of them if they continue to work hard individually and as a team. I wish them the best and will definitely miss coaching them.
