Pirate wrestlers compete in Columbus

Columbus — The Greensburg varsity wrestling team competed in the Columbus East Varsity Invitational Saturday.

The Pirates finished fifth overall, one point out of fourth place.

Placing for Greensburg was Drew Neisius in second place, Matt Scheumann and Justin Dance each in third place, Joe Buening, Brandon Butz and Travis Gauck each in fourth place.

Jordan Smiley, Colten Black, and Nathan Hayes had fifth-place results.

“The Pirates had some ups and downs on Saturday,” said head coach Matt Cochran. “We had some wrestlers show signs of improvements. Justin Dance and Matt Scheumann had their best wrestling up to this point of the season and Brandon Butz wrestled well. Drew Neisius, Joel Chase and Joe Buening continues to be steady and wreslte well.”

Freshman Travis Gauck earned his first varsity win and Colten Black saw his first action of the season after coming off of an injury from football.

“We expect good things from Colten from this point going forward as he gets into wrestling shape and back into the flow of things,” said Cochran. “I thought today was a steady performance. There are areas we can continue to improve upon, but today was a step in the right direction after a difficult week last week. We look forward to our meet Tuesday with Jennings County.”

Greensburg hosts Jennings County Tuesday after the dual was postponed Dec. 6.

The Greensburg junior varsity wrestling squad competed in the Columbus North JV Invitational Saturday.

Highlighting the junior varsity meet was Doug Cain leading the way by going 4-0 in the 220 pound weight class. Senior John Cook went 3-1 at 182 pounds, and Devin Ruble added a win at 145 pounds. It was Ruble’s first high school win.

The JV will be in action again Saturday at the East Central JV tournament.
