Meyer signs to play at Kentucky

Alex Meyer will be going from the blue and white of the Pirates to the blue and white of the Wildcats.

Greensburg’s standout pitcher signed his national letter of intent to attend the University of Kentucky.

“It’s great to get it over and get signed. I feel that Kentucky is a great fit for me,” Alex said. “It’s close to home and that makes it that much better.”

Kentucky won the recruiting battle for Meyer over Michigan, Louisville, Arizona State, LSU and Clemson.

The Wildcats had the inside track from a long time ago.

“I went to a Kentucky and Indiana football game when I was little and said that which ever team won would be my favorite. Kentucky won and I’ve followed them ever since,” Alex said.

Meyer also played in a summer tournament there with the Indiana Bulls and said that helped make the difference.

The Meyers even had blue Christmas lights, his mother Sandy and father Dave recalled with a laugh.

“I am so proud of Alex. He has worked hard to get where he is. We gave up a lot of time with the family in the summer, but it has paid off. We are really proud of him,” Sandy said.

At a young age, Meyer was drawn to baseball.

“At age five or six after supper, he would have me outside throwing him pop-ups. He’d stay out there until dark,” Dave said.

One of the big breaks for Meyer came when he was 11 years old and was asked to play for Doug Burcham and the team that became the Indiana Bats, an elite traveling baseball team.

“Doug has been really instrumental in getting Alex to where he is,” Sandy said.

“I saw immediately that he was a good athlete with an above average arm and speed,” Burcham said. “We used him as our closer and our ace. He could not only pitch, but could run and hit.

“He has come a long way. I use to look down at him,” Doug joked about the 6-7 Meyer.

Meyer is one of very few freshman that have pitched at the varsity level for head coach Scott Moore. He has witnessed the talent of Meyer develop.

“I think I knew (when Alex was) in eighth grade that he had the potential to play in college, just not sure of what level,” Coach Scott Moore said.

“Between his freshman and sophomore years, you could really see his potential. I don’t think he still knows the potential yet. Kentucky is just the tip of it for him,” Coach Scott Moore added.

Meyer played for Quinn Moore of the Indiana Bulls 17 Black team this past summer.

“His talent was far better than anything we had,” Quinn said. “More than his ability, he is a great teammate and leader - vocally and on the field. He’s a joy to be around.”

“He is the best talent of all the kids I saw this summer,” Quinn added.

The senior Pirate pitcher’s talent has also drawn the attention of scouts from Major League Baseball. It is expected that all 30 MLB teams will have representatives visit with Alex this winter - a busy time as he balances school, visits and basketball.
