This past weekend marked HoopStar Basketball’s Third Annual Halloween Hoopfest at the Decatur County YMCA. Tournament Director Devon Brown has watched as this event has become a part of the community.
“It’s a family event that just keeps on growing,” Brown claims.
Opening ceremonies went off without a hitch. The EMS, Fire Department and Sheriff Department all participated in the “Do or Die Shot.” The Fire Department saved the tournament by being the first one to make a free throw.
While the tournament itself amassed 30 teams this year, the real highlight of the event was during the opening of HoopStar’s Hall Of Fame. Past participants, players, teams, sponsors and event locations were honored as the inaugural class was inducted at the Hoopfest.
Brown’s family, the Jackson Family, Team Knight, Jeremie Keithley, Gameplan Graphics and the Halloween Hoopfest itself were all inducted.
The surprises didn’t stop there. Greensburg Gymnastics & More provided entertainment will multiple routines during the ceremony.
Gold Sponsor, Enhanced Telecommunication jumped in on the festivities by introducing their own Cell Man Challenge that allowed a young Tucker Bailey a chance to win $100.
The biggest surprise was revealed by Brown when he stole the tournament’s thunder by proposing to his long time girlfriend, Allison Jackson. The 150 plus spectators gasped and cheered as Allison accepted the proposal.
The actual 3-on-3 event winners included many Greensburg residents.
The 10-and-under crown was won by the Rushville Rebels. The Pirates (Tye Fleetwood, Sean Sellers, Tom Lawrence and Jacob Kelso) dominated the 12-and-under division. The high school division was won in a thriller by Buffalo Wings & Rings (Zach Brown, DJ Wright and Robbie Koors).
First time participants, Ken Nunn’s Crusaders, won their first title in the Open Recreation division. The Top Gun title was claimed by The Works (Mike Johnston, Rolf Van Rijn and Wes Carmony).
Event pictures will be available on the Official HoopStar website (www.hoopstarbasketball.com) soon.
