Waldron —
The South Decatur boys basketball team suffered a tough road loss to conference foe Waldron Thursday, 59-51.
The setback ends South's two-game winning streak, dropping the Cougars to 1-4 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference and 7-10 overall.
South exerted a strong first-half effort to come back from a 14-5 deficit, compiling a 7-0 run to answer a 9-2 opening spurt by the Mohawks. Junior Byron Balser scored 10 first-quarter points, including a pair of 3-pointers, then tied it at 16-all to open the second period.
Senior Michael England put South ahead 18-16 to spark an 8-4 run. Senior Josh Schwering then did what he has done all season, coming off the bench and draining a pair of triples that put South up 26-20 halfway through the second. Junior Cameron Agnew added a jumper during the run.
However, junior Presley Huffman pulled the hosts to within one at 26-25 to end the first half.
Despite a tight third quarter knotted at 35, Huffman made another trey that capped an 8-0 rally to end the period.
The final margin stayed at eight in spite of the Cougars' efforts to neutralize Waldron's edge.
Balser finished with 18 points to lead South, while Schwering followed with 14. Junior Dustin Huff chipped in six, with England adding five. Senior Kyle Cunningham scored three, while senior Tyler Ewing and Agnew rounded it out with two first-half baskets.
South's junior varsity team fell to 13-4 on the season with a 35-34 loss. Connor Hermesch and Taylor Kopplin each led South with 12 points. Hermesch scored six in the first quarter. Kopplin scored seven in the fourth, but it was not enough to withstand Waldron's rally. Kopplin hit a pair of triples. Chris Johannigman and Josh Miller each followed with four, while Andrew Wullenweber hit South's only two free throw attempts.
