Greensburg —
The North Decatur boys basketball team led visiting Knightstown at the half Saturday night, but the Chargers were unable to hold the lead in a 55-53 setback.
North trailed 11-8 after the first quarter before charging ahead for a 29-24 halftime edge.
Knightstown led 41-37 after three periods. North outscored the Panthers 16-14 in the final quarter, but it was not enough in the back-and-forth game.
Senior John Hammersmith led his team with 23 points. Freshmen Zach Johnson and Dayne Lecher each scored 11. Senior Jason Kirchhoff added four, while senior Kevin Geis and junior Brock Ricke chipped in two apiece.
3-pointers (4): Johnson 2, Hammersmith 1, Lecher 1.
North went to the foul line for just four shots, making three.
The North junior varsity team topped the Panthers 40-18 in the first game. The Chargers outscored the Panthers in every quarter and led 24-8 at the half.
Donovan Meyer scored 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Evan Wallpe followed with nine, including 3-for-4 from the foul line. Scoring four apiece were Austin Brown and Luke Badgley, while Brian Williamson and Arek Holloway added three apiece. Holloway’s was a 3-pointer. Justin Weisenbach and Eric Moorman each scored two.
The North boys overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half, but the plays did not go the Chargers’ way in a 52-50 loss to visiting Franklin County Friday.
Head coach Kyle Nobbe’s squad had to feel good about its chances when senior John Hammersmith deposited two of his team-high 16 points at the foul line with 2:33 left in the game.
A 13-6 fourth-quarter edge was not enough for the home team, though, and the Chargers fell to 3-12 on the season.
Junior Josh Weintraut scored a career-high 13 points, including three baskets from the 3-point line. Freshman Zach Johnson added 10 to round out the double-digit scoring.
The North junior varsity team put away the Wildcats 40-19 in the first game. Evan Wallpe led North with 10 points in the win.
