South girls Senior Night tonight
The South Decatur girls basketball team will celebrate Senior Night tonight (Thursday) for Sam Miller, its lone senior. The Lady Cougars host Waldron for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.
Pirate 7A boys battle Spartans
The Columbus Northside Spartans hosted the Greensburg boys 7A Pirates with a 56-45 win. The Spartans jumped out to an early first-period lead, 22-8. Greensburg then settled down scoring 12 to hold the margin to 33-20 at halftime. The bigger, stronger Spartans controlled most of the game.
“However, my kids played mentally and physically strong in the second half,” said coach Bob Barker. “This team could have given up, but instead they competed outscoring Columbus 25-23 in the second half.”
Tucker Bailey had a season-high four rebounds to lead on the boards. Luke Lozier also had four rebounds. Kyle Sellers and Brayton Owens grabbed three apiece. Lozier led all scorers with 21 points. Also in double figures was Sellers with 13. Bailey had five, while Gabe Caplinger, Ty Hall and Owens chipped in two each to round out the scoring.
North boys JV vs Lawrenceburg
The North Decatur boys junior varsity game against Lawrenceburg will be played this Saturday at 10 a.m. in the high school gym. Season passes will be accepted for the JV contest.
Open gym at GCHS fieldhouse
The Decatur County Parks and Recreation Department is offering open gym at the GCHS Fieldhouse on Sundays from 2 to 9 p.m. Take advantage of this opportunity to play basketball, volleyball or walk on the indoor track, offered free of charge by the Parks and Recreation Department.
YMCA youth basketball extended
The Decatur County Family YMCA has extended its registration for its Kindergarten-through-sixth grade youth basketball leagues (K-1, 2-3, 4-6 Age Divisions) to this Saturday. The deadline for the sports cheerleading program (ages 5-9) will be extended to Jan. 19. Interested families can sign up their youth at the Y and building hours can be found on their Web site, which is www.decaturcountyfamilyymca.org. The Y does not turn away community members for inability to pay and scholarships are available.
