Greensburg —
Neither path to the IHSAA Class 3A State Championship was easy for Greensburg or Fort Wayne Concordia.
Second-ranked Greensburg, 25-1, will tip off against Fort Wayne Concordia (23-4) Saturday at 6 p.m. at Bankers Life Fieldhouse - home to the Indiana Pacers.
Just like Greensburg, Concordia’s Semi-State title last Saturday was its first. Concordia advanced through the Garrett Sectional 22 tournament with wins over Dwenger 55-40, Leo 73-59 and Woodlan 73-38. The Cadets topped a 15-9 Hamilton Heights team 65-49 in the regional semifinal, then an 18-7 Norwell squad 67-58 for the regional title.
Concordia advanced to the state title game with a 68-63 win over third-ranked Andrean at Huntington North.
The Pirates have proven all season - especially in the tournament - they don’t need to be ranked at the top to keep winning. Greensburg won its second straight Sectional championship with three team-oriented games, setting the tone for the state tournament. The Pirates beat South Dearborn 76-43, came from behind and pulled away from No. 8 Batesville 77-65 in the semifinal, then defeated Madison 69-52 for the sectional title.
Greensburg faced its first opponent ranked in the top 10 since playing Batesville, a matchup against No. 4 Evansville Bosse to test its big-game preparedness. The Pirates crushed another Bulldog team 82-65 March 9 to set up a rematch of last year’s regional semifinal against Brownstown Central. The Braves entered the title game ranked fifth in the state, but the Pirates avenged the early exit of last March with a 65-54 victory for the regional crown.
Top-ranked Mt. Vernon (Fortville) was the next team hoping to eliminate the Pirates. The result turned out to be a blowout...in favor of the Pirates. Greensburg shot 24-for-40 from the floor (60 percent), including nine 3-pointers, en route to a 62-37 Semi-State championship win.
The Cadets own six sectional championship trophies, with their most recent being in 2006. Their most recent regional title was in 2000, with this year’s title being their third overall.
