Greensburg Daily News Athletes of the Week

Female Co-Athletes - Tara Lecher and Heather Hayden

Greensburg — The Greensburg Daily News female co-athletes of the week are North Decatur senior Tara Lecher and junior Heather Hayden.

Heather Hayden

North Decatur Junior Hitter

North Decatur junior Heather Hayden helped the Lady Charger volleyball team tally a much-needed conference win Tuesday over South Decatur, its county rival.

The Lady Chargers beat South in four games, thanks to the aggressive and consistent hitting of North's front hitters.

Hayden led the way, posting 18 kills on a 29-for-34 hitting effort. She served 22-for-23 with five aces and received 12-for-17. She also added two digs.

North head coach Betsy Litmer said Hayden's night was the "best all-around" performance she saw out of her since Hayden's freshman year. She credited the junior's patience at attacking the ball and her solid contact in recording big kills during the match.

Tara Lecher

North Decatur Senior Golfer

If someone asked North golf coach Dan Borns why the Lady Chargers have improved its season record to 14-2 after Thursday's win over Oldenburg Academy, senior Tara Lecher certainly would be in the discussion.

North's captain and No. 1 golfer picked up another meet medalist honor Thursday against the Twisters.

Lecher carded a 39 Tuesday to start the week in a win over Cambridge City Lincoln, then followed that up Thursday with a 47 for co-medalist honors with Oldenburg's Nora Stacey.

All but one golfer from last year's team returned this season, and North has shown a hint of peaking for the sectional meet. Lecher's success seems to be rubbing off on her teammates. Sophomore Allie Acton posted a team-best 50 Wednesday against East Central and South Decatur, while senior Abby Stewart sank an eagle on her first hole Tuesday to score a 45 on North Branch's Prairie Par 35.

Despite enduring the biggest grind of the season with four events this week, North's best golf is still ahead. Lecher and the Lady Chargers are ready to reserve their best performances of the year for the conference meet and the sectional tournament later this fall.
