Greensburg Daily News
The Greensburg varsity basketball team won its conference opener Saturday night, defeating South Dearborn 74-41 at home.
Greensburg, now 2-0 overall, led the Knights 19-4 after the first quarter.
“We got off to another good start,” said head coach Stacy Meyer.
The Pirates’ defensive press opened up several offensive opportunities throughout the game, and Greensburg won the rebounding edge on both ends of the floor.
“I was really pleased with our defensive intensity,” said Meyer. “I thought we carried that through the entire game. I was very pleased with how well we offensive rebounded as well.”
The defense helped open up Greensburg’s transition game.
“We got out in transition well. We got a lot of easy baskets in transition,” he said. “That led to our 3-point shooting. How well we played in transition was a key to our 3-point shooting.”
Eight different players scored for the Pirates, while four scored in double-figures. Junior Sean Sellers scored 21 points, including 6-for-7 at the foul line and a 3-pointer. Junior Bryant McIntosh followed with 12 points, including two treys. Junior Macy Holdsworth and sophomore Ryan Welage each scored 11 and made a triple. Junior Collin Rigney made a pair of three’s on his way to eight points. Senior Shane Ploeger scored six, junior Tom Lawrence added three and senior Riley Billieu chipped in two.
Meyer applauded his team for another unselfish performance offensively.
“We really shared the basketball well,” he said. “A lot of field goals were off of assists. I was really proud of our kids for sharing the ball and moving the basketball.”
Free throws (13-for-16): Sellers 6-for-7; McIntosh 2-for-2; Rigney 2-for-2; Ploeger 2-for-2; Lawrence 1-for-2; Billieu 0-for-1.
Greensburg faces back-to-back conference tests this weekend. The Pirates will travel to Lawrenceburg Friday night, and will host Batesville Saturday night. The JV games will begin action at 6 p.m. each night.
