Greensburg — Imagine, if you will, you could enjoy all the close competition and excitement of World Cup Soccer right in your own backyard. Imagine if you will, seeing fierce rivalries battle it out for a championship coveted throughout the area. Imagine, if you will, an entire day of thrilling soccer competition absolutely free.

Your imagination can take a rest as this weekend at the Washington Soccer Park; the Decatur County Youth Soccer Club proudly presents the U-12 Girls portion of the Eastern Indiana Soccer Association (EISA) Tournament.

Seven games beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending with the last one starting at 5:30 p.m. will determine the two finalists who will compete in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The action promises to be fast and furious as this tourney is a single elimination event, and the teams will have to play well or go home.

The Decatur County team is sponsored by Kova Fertilizer and will start their run for soccer glory with the first game mentioned above at 8:30 a.m. against the Sunman 3 team backed by Wilhelm Lumber. If they win the first game, they compete again at 1 p.m. against powerhouse Batesville 2 team showing the colors of Raver Ready Mix Concrete. Their third game of the day (again assuming they advance from the second game) will be the final one of the day at 5:30 p.m. Depending on weather and sun light conditions, the first and last games may be under the lights as well. Coach Mike Myers observed the girls have improved steadily throughout the season, and the team appears to be peaking just at the right time with the team notching its first win in its most recent contest.

Other Decatur County teams will be involved in EISA action as well this weekend at various venues. The U-12 Boys coached by Nicholas Dye-Pellison are wearing the colors of Michelle McGinn Ð Realtor and will play at least two games in pool play at Batesville Soccer Park. Their games will be at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday, and the championship game will be 2 p.m. Sunday. The U-14 Boys have Buffalo Wings and Rings supporting them and are coached by Kris Overmeyer. They have admittedly the toughest road to go as they have a special Òplay-inÓ game on Thursday night to win in order to compete in the regular double elimination competition that begins on Saturday. The first Saturday game would be at 9:45 a.m. at Batesville.

Last, but not least, is the U-14 Girls guided by Joey Roberts who play at Sunman. This team has won the most regular season games of the Decatur County quartet of teams, and they display the orange colors of Standard Fertilizer. Their games on Saturday in the pool events are at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday. One other tourney involving a collision between 4 Decatur County and 7 Sunman U-10 Coed teams will pound the Sunman pitch this weekend as well.

Decatur County Parks and Recreation is a sponsor of the soccer club. The soccer club also receives funding through the United Fund of Decatur County.

As mentioned before, admission to all contests are free. Although there is some limited bleacher seating available where the contests are held, spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for those few moments when they are not on their feet viewing the action. All the single and double elimination games will have overtimes and penalty kick scenarios if there is a tie at the end of regulation. Games consist of two, 30-minute halves for all but the U-10 games, which are four, 12-minute quarters. The concession stands will be open with plenty of beverages and food available.
