Charlottesville —
The South Decatur boys basketball team played Eastern Hancock Friday for the first time as conference rivals, but the Cougars made their visit to Charlottesville unkind for the host Royals.
South improved to 9-3 overall and 1-3 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference with a 53-45 win, snapping a three-game skid.
Head coach Tom Black’s Cougars led 8-2 early on the strength of two 3-pointers from senior Byron Balser. South carried a 25-19 lead into halftime. Junior Taylor Kopplin’s triple to beat the first-quarter buzzer put South up 14-9, and Balser scored at the buzzer to give South the six-point lead at the break.
Balser led South with 18 points. Senior Cameron Agnew added 14 points, unofficially, and a crucial steal late in the fourth quarter. He hit 4-for-4 from the foul line to secure the lead. Senior Jordan Hatton followed with six points, while senior Josh Miller scored seven. Junior Andrew Wullenweber scored five, while Kopplin and junior Chris Johannigman each added triples.
The junior varsity Cougars fell in the first game.
South hosts Greensburg (11-1) Saturday night for a county rivalry showdown.
