Pirate grapplers win Tri High Invite

Straughn — The Greensburg wrestling team continues to pile up the wins this winter as the conference tournament and postseason approach.

The Pirates won their first tournament since the 2007-2008 season by claiming the Tri High Invitational Championship Saturday. Greensburg went 4-1 on the day and finished in a 3-way tie for first with Alexandria and Centerville. The Pirates were crowned as the champions because they had the most match points on the day.

Greensburg started of the day with 64-15 victory over Northeastern. Greensburg then defeated Daleville 69-3. The Pirates also defeated Centerville 56-21 and Tri 51-25.

The only blemish on the day for the Pirates was a 35-34 loss to Alexandria. The match ended in a 34-34 tie and Alexandria won on “tiebreaker criteria H,” which is most first points scored in the match.

Centerville defeated Alexandria earlier in the day, which led to the three way tie.

“We are very happy to win a championship," said Greensburg head coach Matt Cochran. "The guys have worked hard and have shown a lot of determination to turn this season around. We have been wrestling really well over the past month and we have good momentum going into the EIAC tournament.”

Five Pirate wrestlers went 5-0 on the day. Freshman Brandon Butz at 113 pounds, sophomore Jordan Smiley at 126 pounds, Senior Justin Dance at 170 pounds, junior Colten Black at 182 pounds, and junior Drew Neisius at 195 pounds were undefeated. Sophomore Nathan Hayes, Junior Matt Scheumann, and Senior John Cook went 4-1. Joel Chase went 3-2 and Dakota Deiwert went 2-2. Travis Gauck and Chaz Smiley each added two wins and Devin Ruble went 1-0 in varsity action.

Next up for the Pirates is the EIAC tournament Saturday at Lawrenceburg.
