The Greensburg cross country team had its annual awards banquet Thursday night.
Freshmen Alli Duerstock, Shelby Pake, and Mary Kate Porter earned their first varsity letter. Additional girls letter winners included sophomore Cara Zeigler, junior Erin Hamilton, and seniors Melissa Brickett, Ericka Carman, Tori Helms, and Cierra Luers.
Brickett was named the Most Improved Runner for the 2012 season. She lowered her personal best from 28:16 in 2011 to 23:47 in 2012, and also earned all-county with a fifth-place finish.
The girls’ Most Valuable Runner was freshman Shelby Pake, who finished first for the Lady Pirates in every meet this season. Pake also won six races including, the small-school race at the East Central Invitational, the big-school race at the South Dearborn Invitational, the Decatur county meet, and the EIAC championship.
Pake set the freshman record and is second all-time for 5K. She earned All-Sectional with a fifth-place finish and All-Regional taking 10th in her best time ever of 19:47 Her season ended by finishing 49th in 20:11 at the Carmel semi-state. She was also named honorable mention All-State by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.
For the boys, letter recipients included three freshmen, Michael Back, Peyton Buening, and Ben Newhart; sophomore Clayton Moore, junior Ethan Sebastian and seniors Colin Evans, Bryce Nystrom, and Justin Starkey also received a varsity for their contributions to the high school team.
Freshman Michael Back was the Most Improved Runner for the 2012 season. He had six PR’s during the year, including his last race when he ran 18:38 at the regional meet. Bryce Nystrom and Peyton Buening were also recognized for earning all-conference and all-sectional.
Colin Evans was named the Most Valuable Runner for the Pirates for the second consecutive year. Evans was the top runner for the Pirates on seven occasions this year. He was all-county for the fourth time, all-EIAC for the second time, and all-sectional for the first time. Evans finished his career with a PR of 17:33.
Carman, Helms, and Evans also received awards as 4-year letter winners.
